“Un vélo une ville” in Aylmer this summer

A new service for seniors will launch in Aylmer this coming summer. “Un vélo une ville” aims to reconnect isolated seniors with their communities by picking them up and driving them to their errands and appointments.  Seniors who no longer drive or have mobility issues can reserve a three-seated tricycle through “Un vélo une ville”, and one of their drivers will come to their door to pick them up.

“The service can improve the lives of seniors by breaking their isolation, and promoting their participation in social and economic events of their community,” said Mariam Jardé, a Project Manager with “Un vélo une ville”.

“Un vélo une ville” will also create opportunities for youth within their communities and bridge generational divides. Students or youth returning to school will be solicited as drivers for the scooters; the service then offers a bursary to students at the end of their work period to support them in their studies.

“The intergenerational relationships created here will encourage the young,” added Jardé. “This facilitates both their re-integration (into school) and student retention.” She said the service adds to the kids’ sense of self-worth because they are helping others.

 

Scooter drivers are trained in CPR, first-aid, and communication, in addition to driving the scooters.  

 

The service started in Gatineau in 2015, and will expand this summer. “We are trying to meet the high demand from seniors living in Aylmer, for the summer of 2016,” Jardé said. “We will visit new streets in town and historic sites that are worth a visit.”
