Yoga Therapy – not your usual yoga class!
Yoga Therapy is a relatively new field. YT fine-tunes a personal yoga practice to support an individual’s particular health needs and goals. Every person wants to be happy and healthy and yet the human being is quite wonderfully
complex.
Yoga in general helps support the whole person by addressing both physical health and mental/emotional balance. Further, yoga practices have the cumulative effect of increasing an overall sense of well-being. A person who feels good about their self tends to also feel a greater sense of purpose and meaning in life. This inner harmony can be called spiritual health.
YT facilitates balance at all these levels while accounting for each person’s uniqueness. Every YT program begins with a personal consultation that allows the client to identify their main health concern or current life challenge. The intake assessment considers lifestyle habits, diet, sleep, exercise and interests as well as medical history.
The yoga therapist does not diagnose, treat specific conditions nor prescribe or change medication. The approach is global and re-integrates the area in difficulty into the whole. In this way, YT is fully complementary to care provided by physicians, chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage, acupuncture, etc. Recommendations may include therapeutic movement and adapted yoga exercise, proper breathing, sound, self-awareness/mindfulness techniques and guided deep relaxation sessions (Yoga Nidra). Group classes don’t exceed six participants.
This fall, yoga therapy is available right here in Aylmer. Kumari-Catherine Gillies has been teaching yoga for over 30 years. She was the founding director of a successful local yoga centre for many years. As a highly trained and experienced yoga therapist, Ms Gillies has the great distinction of being certified by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT).
