Auberge Symmes Museum receives accreditation as a official museum institution

Auberge Symmes is officially the first accredited museum institution in the Outaouais. The Ministry of Culture and Communication announced that 24 museums across Quebec received this accreditation.
“This seal of quality recognizes the years of work we have put in to obtain this accreditation and puts our museum on the national and international map. It also makes us eligible to apply for funding from the Ministry, which was not possible before,” said Gilles Laroche, President of the Auberge Symmes Museum.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Communication, this accreditation ensures that the population has access to high quality public interest establishments and allows for the application of internationally recognized standards in the museum. The new status ensured the protection and enhancement of the heritage of the region. The accreditation of museum institutions is issued annually and is valid for five years.
The Symmes Museum is a valued piece of Aylmer’s history that works to preserve the heritage of Old Aylmer. The building was built in 1831 by Charles Symmes, the co-founder of Aylmer, and was used as an inn for those travelling from Montreal. The Symmes Museum offers exhibits on the story of Aylmer’s history and hosts various temporary exhibits such as their most recent “Stitches through Time” which showcased quilts new and old.
