---- Aylmer Legion struggles to help whole community
Despite the pandemic, the Aylmer Legion continues to help our veterans, their families, our military and the local community.
Many community projects continue, such as our “Izzy Dolls” project; pocket-size dolls are knitted and sent to our military overseas to comfort children in conflict areas. We also continue, with the help of some local merchants and through Gite Ami, to provide our homeless veterans with socks, toiletries, scarves and toques.
Our volunteers are fundraising -- such as cooking and delivering home-cooked meals once a month for a donation. Others make and deliver thousands of masks to organizations and individuals; seasonal fruit cakes can also be ordered, with profits to the Legion; soon you will be able to order a delivery of “sweet boxes” of “Sucre à la crème” for a small donation, as well.
“Poppy Campaign” funds can only be used for veterans' support. When the Legion needs to pay bills or have repairs done, we have to find other ways to raise the funds. We rely on your generosity!
COVID 19 has brought great challenges for all. For the first time since our inception in 1932, our Legion hall will be closed on November 11. There will not be a parade or ceremony in the park. For everyone’s safety we must avoid gatherings in large crowds. We will have a virtual ceremony online and a large wreath at our Cenotaph with the names of those who sponsored a wreath. "We will remember them" in a meaningful way, despite this year's restrictions.
Our veterans, their families, our serving military, the community – all of their needs are real and need your support. Fewer “Poppy boxes” will be in the stores this year. Since the majority of our Campaign funds come from those boxes, our fund-raising will be greatly impacted.
If you want to help, call 819-684-7063, leave your name and phone number and someone will call you back. There are also many ways to donate: Drop a cheque in our mailbox at 59 Bancroft; Mail a cheque to 59 Bancroft, Gatineau, J9H 4N6; Bank e-transfer at: aylmerlegionlegion33@bell.net; or donate through our Go Fund Me page at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/aylmerlegion33
No matter how you do it, we appreciate your support.
