---Aylmerites invited to Old Aylmer tree-planting blitz
Sophie Demers
The Aylmer Sector Partners (PSA) are announcing a new reforestation project and are hoping to get Aylmerites involved. The goal is to plant 1,200 trees in the Old Aylmer and Marina districts by 2022. The overall population of Aylmer has had an 18.33% rise since 2011, one of the largest increases in Quebec. Due to this population growth, a significant portion of Aylmer has been deforested to make room for residential areas.
This project aims to raise awareness, inform citizens, reduce areas of intense heat, increase forest canopy cover to reach 15-20%, retain rainwater through reforestation and create community activities. “Adopt your Tree” will also preserve the heritage beauty of Old Aylmer.
The PSA, which brings together 46 member organizations, created environmental and sustainable development projects such as “Adopt your Tree” to fight the impacts of climate change. PSA assessed the negative impact of deforestation on the quality of life for residents, the natural biodiversity and the environment.
Community members that would like to participate are invited to visit the PSA kiosk in September. They can register to purchase, plant and/or maintain a tree. PSA will be at the folk festival (September 11-12) and the Oktoberfest Festival in Aylmer (September 25-26) at 67 A, rue Principale. You can also register on their website www.adoptetonarbre.ca
