----  Boucher Forest -- for how long? (Translated)

 

I completely agree with P. Trottier's letter in the October 5th Bulletin, exposing some very disturbing figures on the environment and denouncing the harmful effects of mega-projects such as Champlain Village Urbain by Brigil. What an ironic coincidence that elsewhere in the same edition, Brigil is still in the news. This time for another project involving the purchase of 11 percent (80 acres) of the Boucher Forest.
    How many bites into Boucher before there's more left? Smaller bites to make it look smaller? The company says it cares about the forest and will protect it. Protecting our forest like the company did with the clear-cutting of a vast territory north of Aylmer a few years ago?  Forgive us if we remain very skeptical.
     Climate change is occurring at a frightening and intense rate. According to former Toronto Mayor David Miller, cities are the source of 70 percent of GHGs. So it's urgent that we stop being part of the problem. Should all mega-projects be subject to a consultation that includes the entire Aylmer region? They may start out with a small area where there are few people to oppose them but have a big impact on the whole area. 
    We will see how committed our newly elected officials are to protecting our environment and our quality of life. It's up to us citizens to get involved and follow them closely.
