CANADA GOOSE (continued)
Do all Canada geese migrate?
The answer is no.
Is it because of global warming and milder winters? It's certainly a factor, given the ever-increasing number of individuals wintering among us. However, if they remain in ever-increasing numbers in winter, it's because of the presence of food in agricultural fields.
In fact, there are two distinct populations. There are the migrants, who flee winter and travel thousands of kilometers to reach their ultimate destination in southern and central North America.
And there are resident geese that can stay in our regions in winter as long as there's open water and food, even when temperatures are extremely cold.
In summer, like humans, geese frequent parks, open spaces and golf courses (much to the chagrin of some).
So you can see them all year round.
