---- Canadian leadership in global education?
Canadian families have faced many education challenges this year but not nearly as many as those in the global south. Over 260 million children are out of school there and that was before the pandemic. The situation is worse for girls with almost 20 million girls in danger of never returning to school because of early child marriage, pregnancy, child labor and other forms of exploitation.
Every girl should have the right to determine her own future, and this begins with education.
Canada has been a strong supporter of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) since its inception. The GPE works in the countries with the greatest needs and targets the children who are hardest to reach. At the 2018 G7 Summit in Charlevoix, Prime Minister Trudeau showed historic leadership for education for girls. I am hoping that our prime minister will renew his commitment to education at this year’s G7 Summit by giving $100MIL/year for 5 years to the GPE.
