Common goldeneye
In January, nature is rather quiet, sleeping in the cold. However, in the ice-free water above the Deschênes Rapids, individuals or small groups of goldeneyes can often be observed. These ducks dive to the bottom to feed on invertebrates. They can be seen drifting downstream with the current as they dive, until they approach the rapids. They then fly upstream and resume their merry-go-round. Cold-weather companions - heading north again in spring.
