LETTER
----- Front gardens, not front lawns!
"Change starts in your garden" (letter, August 11) -- thank you to the authors for their comments on front yard gardening.
Grass produces oxygen, it’s part of our system, so it is good unless it is sprayed with an insecticide. It is also completely acceptable and necessary, as far as the environment is concerned, to diversify. Since when is a garden of fruits, vegetables or flowers offensive?
How many people we could help by having a garden in front of our houses? Any unneeded fruit and vegetables could go to the Centre alimentaire, or anyone else.
And how much nicer would a garden of wild flowers be which produces pollen for bees? Isn’t the state of our planet a warning that we must do better and in a different way?
The city of Gatineau shows by its attitude how concerned it really is with the environment. It is hypocritical! I hope that a new mayor as well as the new counsel will have a better attitude towards our environment, and that all those who wish to make a choice other than a lawn, will be able to do so without being penalized.
