Hadley & Philemon Wright move toward Sport-études program

The Western Québec School Board (WQSB) continues working for a Sport-études program for the 2017-2018 school year at Hadley Junior High and Philemon Wright High School (PWHS).

Last fall, the Board’s council agreed to apply for the program after a number of parents interested in enrolling their children in the program for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years contacted the board. Last October, the Board’s information session on the program attracted about 50 parents.

 

During the previous school year, the Ministry of Education gave the board the go-ahead to run a Sport-études program, but registration numbers were too low.

Each school must have a minimum of 25 student-athletes enrolled, meaning 25 at Hadley and 25 at PWHS, every year. Despite its earlier approval, the Board must apply again. Sport-études programs are designed to support student-athletes who are recognized by their sports federations for their athletic and academic performance in secondary school.

There are no Sport-études program in English high schools in West Quebec; in the French system, three schools offer the program in various disciplines, Polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau, located beside the Branchaud-Brière sports complex, l’École secondaire Mont-Bleu and l’École secondaire de l'Île. There is no recognized sports program at the primary level.
