Local author publishes serialized cyberpunk novel

Recently publishing the first of several episodes of his online cyberpunk novel, Aylmer-based author Didier Periès is hoping to captivate readers with intriguing science-fiction elements, introspective story telling and an unconventional literary approach. Titled Le Métal vaut toujours mieux que la viande, the serialized story follows the adventures of Malvy Kiai Eurodyne, a non-gendered bionic person living in a cyberpunk universe. 

Set in the future, where robots reign supreme and all humans are at least part machine, the story intends to incorporate suspenseful action, creative technology, and mindful reflexion on cybernetics’ place in society. “It’s science-fiction at its purest,” Periès said. “It allows one to really get into a different universe than what we are used to.” Portrayed in a relatively sombre setting, the author noted that the story intends to depict a dystopian society where the characters have utopian aspirations.

Publishing a new episode (chapter) each week, every addition to the story features images to help submerge readers into the story, as well as a Spotify playlist with a cyberpunk soundtrack. They are relatively short reads, averaging several minutes apiece. A passionate cyberpunk enthusiast, Periès said he had wanted to write a science-fiction novel for many years.  “It’s really the kind of literature that I love, that I’ve read for a really long time,” he said. “I’d say it’s pretty much my domain of expertise.” So, in December of 2019, he began writing a book on the subject before taking a hiatus.
