---Resident and firefighters rescue two stranded in the Deschênes rapids
With the help of a local resident, the Service de sécurité incendie de Gatineau (SSIG) rescued two people stranded in the Deschênes rapids on July 24.
According to a report issued by the SSIG on the same date, the incident happened shortly after 3 pm when two boaters sailing towards the rough waves of the Deschênes rapids in individual inflatable water crafts called 9-1-1 for help.
Unable to row against the current, the press release explained that both individuals ended up going over the rapids and falling in the water. With both victims stranded in the water with their respective floatation devices, it continued stating that a nearby resident downstream of the rapids who witnessed the incident raced over to rescue one of the victims with his boat, while the second victim clung onto a rock before being rescued by an SSIG boat crew.
Stating that Ottawa firefighters were also on hand to help, the SSIG said the victims weren’t badly injured and were treated by paramedics on the Ottawa shoreline shortly after.
