Sports-Study for English students?  

The Western Quebec school Board (WQSB) is working toward a sport-study program at Hadley Junior and Philemon Wright High Schools for 2019-2020. In theory, the program could start in September, 2019, because it has been accepted with conditions, and the WQSB is confident it can meet the requirements. “Sports Concentration programs will not be considered until the Sport-Études program is successfully implemented”, announced the Board recently.

There is no English-language school in the region that offers a sports-study program.  

The Western Quebec board originally wanted the program for the 2017-2018 school year, but was unable to fulfill the conditions within the government’s timeline, which led to the withdrawn of the provisional authorization. 

Mont-bleu and Nicolas-Gatineau High Schools do have Sport-Études program for their athlete-students, and the program was previously offered at de l’Île High School. The program requires an agreement between a school and a local non-accredited sports organization. It is intended to support students who are recognized for their athletic and academic performances. In essence, students go to class in the mornings (8:45-12:45) and practice their sports in the afternoon.  

There are more than 6000 recognized Sport-études programs across Quebec, in 48 high schools. The program does not apply to primary schools. Most often in Quebec, for every school commission, there is a least one sports-study program.
