--- Women object to funds to new nuclear projects
Last September, women who are Indigenous and non-Indigenous community leaders in science, medicine, law and environmental protection wrote to the federal government asking it stop funding new nuclear reactors. Canada is a member of an international nuclear waste treaty and has a legal obligation to minimize generation of radioactive waste. Federal funding for new nuclear reactors would be an abnegation of this treaty obligation. Passing off a monumental problem like nuclear waste disposal to non-elected corporate entities is obscene.
My personal view, besides supporting this request, is that the nuclear industry is a back hole for government funds (our taxes) going to a few big corporations instead of supporting the removal of nuclear wastes and funding of renewable sources of energy. We must be very careful and examine all proposals with exceptional care!
