2021 Municipal election candidates
With the 2021 municipal election set for November 7, campaign season is nearly in full swing as more candidates are launching themselves in the running.
After Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin steps down as the city’s Mayor, and a vast majority of councillors also opting not to run for another mandate, Gatineau’s municipal council table will feature a lot of fresh faces for the next four years, including one from a new district.
On October 5, the Municipal council will hold its last meeting before the election. Council is mandated to cease seating at the councillors’ table 30 days before the election, unless there’s an emergency, and the mayor and councillors will continue with their duties as elected officials until new members of council are sworn in.
Noting that decision day will take place on November 7 between 9:30 am and 8 pm, the city says people will be able to access advanced voting polls on October 30 and 31, and at the city’s Returning office on November 3, all within the same timeframe.
The absentee voting period will go from October 4 to November 5, and the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is October 27.
To be eligible for an absentee ballot, one must submit a request to the election’s returning officer and be registered on Gatineau’s list of electors.
People aged 70 and older, as well as vulnerable residents in mandatory or recommended isolation due to Covid-19, and people living in healthcare facilities, and their caregivers (if living at the same address) are also admissible for absentee ballots.
Registration forms to request absentee ballots can be filled and submitted on the city’s website.
The city will review the voters list between October 18 and 22.
Continuing to recruit employees for the municipal election for the rest of the month, the city says the period to submit applications will be from September 17 to October 1 at 4:30 pm.
Gatineau’s City Clerk Geneviève Leduc will be the election’s Returning Officer.
Of the city’s now 19 districts – with the creation of Mitigomijokan (district 5) – only seven incumbent candidates are in the running.
In addition, two councillors, Maude-Marquis-Bissonnette (Plateau) and Jean-François Leblanc (Lac-Beauchamp), have joined the mayoral race, and another, Mike Duggan (Deschênes), is attempting to win the election to represent his third district.
