A wave of break-ins are currently causing concern among residents of the Aylmer area, where several similar incidents have been reported in recent weeks.
The Gatineau Police Service (SPVG) told the Bulletin that about ten cases with a similar modus operandi were currently under investigation. In each case, the suspects entered homes by forcing open a window or patio door, before stealing various valuables. The incidents reportedly occurred mainly in broad daylight while residents were away from home.
Police responses have occurred on Arthur-Quesnel and De Bruyne streets, and in other locations.
Residents of the Aylmer area interviewed by the Bulletin all stated that these repeated break-ins over the past few weeks were alarming, but many of them believe that community vigilance had increased since the incidents, which is a positive development. Other residents expressed confidence that the police would be able to resolve the situation.
The SPVG echoed this sentiment, acknowledging that the situation was a concern for the local population, while noting that investigations and inquiries were still ongoing. The police department also indicated that it had increased its presence in the area and asked its patrol officers to exercise vigilance.
In addition, the Gatineau Police Service is reminding residents of certain preventive measures they should take. They are advised to avoid leaving items outside that could facilitate access to their homes. The installation of alarm systems and surveillance cameras is also recommended. While they do not guarantee absolute protection, these devices can deter criminals and help gather tangible evidence.
The Gatineau Police Service also encourages residents to register their surveillance cameras with the department to strengthen collaboration between the police and the community during investigations.
