Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Sunday, March 23, that Canadians will head to the polls on April 28 in a snap federal election. After requesting the dissolution of Parliament from Governor General Mary Simon, Carney launched his campaign by calling for a “strong, positive mandate” to confront what he described as an escalating crisis. He pointed to America’s President Donald Trump’s recent trade actions—including steep tariffs and threats to Canadian sovereignty—as the catalyst for the early vote.
Carney warned that Canada is facing the most serious challenge of this generation and said the country must respond by strengthening its economy and standing firm in defence of its independence. On the domestic front, he addressed immigration and housing, noting that post-pandemic population growth has outpaced the country’s infrastructure. He emphasized that immigration caps will remain in place until adequate housing is available. Carney closed his announcement with a message of unity and defiance: “Vive le Canada.”
