Dovercourt summer camps

 

Signing your child up for camp at Ottawa’s Dovercourt Recreation Centre might be one of the best things you do for your child this year.  The camp’s incredible variety of programs offers something for everyone.  Program director Geoff Cass says, “We have a great sports program, but we don’t leave anyone out.  We have camps for kids with interests in art, music, adventure and the outdoors.” 

Adventure camps, including white water rafting, wilderness preservation and orienteering will give your child fresh air and exercise.  Is your child fascinated by a career as a police officer, firefighter or paramedic?  911 Rescue Academy gives children a glimpse into how to become a real-life hero, plus up-close exposure to emergency vehicles.

Budding television producers will learn from industry professionals in Dovercourt’s joint program with Rogers TV.   Future pilots will love the Rockcliffe Flying Club’s aviation camp.  Busking fans will be trained by professionals and perform on Sparks Street.

Does your child love music?  The Ukulele Band will practice songs by headliners at next September’s CityFolk—and play those songs on stage at the event.  Rock University students will also play at the CityFolk or even at next summer’s Bluesfest.

The new junior overnight camping program gently introduces younger campers to sleeping away from home, with two nights spent at the MacSkimmings outdoor education centre.

It’s not a bad idea to have your kids in camp close to your work, points out Mr Cass, because car rides give parents and children a chance to communicate without distraction.

 

“Instead of dropping them off somewhere near your house, you have the extra time in the car to get closer to them.  When you pick them up, you have time to hear about their day, when they’re excited and eager to share.”
