Election promises, promises, promises
The election called for September reflects the vain attempt by the Trudeau government to grab a majority while the main opposition is seen to be low in the polls. But the election provides an opening for the NDP, which has constantly signaled its intent to work for the vulnerable and to provide an alternative in terms of vision and substance.
Previously Trudeau broke his promise to reform the electoral system. The Pontiac riding, commuting distance from the capital, has slow, dysfunctional internet connectivity. Its MP promised a quick fix in 2015. After 5 years of Liberal rule, there has been no economic rejuvenation or investment in the Pontiac by the government. Lack of opportunity drives the youth to leave. The construction of a nuclear waste disposal site at Chalk River has been met by a shrug of the shoulders.
Canada is the only G-7 country not meeting its emissions standards. Climate change exigencies require action, transition strategies, not vague promises and the purchase of more pipelines. A consequence of this inability to tackle problems must be a vote by Canadians that reflects the desire of people to vote for dedicated MP’s and a sincere government resolute in its vision.
