LETTER
Empty rinks, heavy heart
I have a hard time with what I saw (or didn’t see) last Monday, March 4th, the first day of March break.
I decided to take a walk in my old neighbourhood of Deschênes around 3 pm.
It was one of the nicest days of this winter. It was sunny, -7C, hardly any breeze.
I walked by the skating rink and I was SHOCKED at what I saw.
There was nobody around, I mean NOBODY. The rink had almost perfect ice on top of that.
Back in the 70s, you could hardly skate on that rink without bumping into somebody.
It was so busy they had to schedule times for organized hockey games for the kids, same with teen hockey games, public skating, adult broom ball games, also carnival events for a whole week. (Yes, we did have a carnival back then.)
My first reaction was: “This place doesn’t deserve a rink.”
My second reaction: “How much does it cost to maintain this rink?”
