Gatineau and Ottawa Strengthen Ties with First Economic Cooperation Agreement

Gatineau and Ottawa now want to work even more closely together to develop their regional economies. The mayors of the two cities, Maude Marquis-Bissonnette and Mark Sutcliffe, formalized their first economic cooperation agreement on August 25, an initiative hailed as historic by both administrations.

The objective is, in particular, to reduce certain economic barriers between the two shores and to better coordinate their efforts in several sectors. The agreement provides for increased collaboration in economic development, mobility, and tourism.

Two Cities with Closely Linked Realities

For the mayor of Gatineau, this collaboration primarily recognizes a reality already well-established in the National Capital Region. Every day, thousands of people cross the Ottawa River to work, study, or take advantage of the services and activities offered on both sides, among other things. “Our region is an integrated economy that thrives on both sides of the Ottawa River,” explained Mayor Marquis-Bissonnette in her message following the signing of the agreement.

Among the announced objectives are supporting businesses, attracting investment, and strengthening sectors considered strategic for the region, notably cybersecurity and defence. The two cities also aim to improve the mobility of people and goods across the region.

Collaboration in this challenging economic climate

Tourism is also among the targeted sectors. Tourisme Outaouais and Tourism Ottawa have already been collaborating for several years. This new agreement could therefore lead to the development of more joint initiatives to promote the tourist attractions on both shores.

The current economic climate also gives significant importance to this collaboration. New US tariffs are creating uncertainty for Canadian businesses, so Gatineau and Ottawa want to encourage local purchasing and strengthen regional economic ties. For both cities, the message is clear: Ottawa and Gatineau want to leverage their complementary strengths to advance the entire National Capital Region.
