Library designs 

I just read the following note about the value of public libraries – the full-service kind, built and designed for real people to use, day after day. It puts the user in the focus, which has always been the first purpose of public libraries.

“Imagine a place where you can sit, read, eat, write, learn or create -- all without having to pay $6 for a latte or a flaky pastry, or without feeling guilty for camping out in a coffee shop for an afternoon. Wildly diverging populations continue to seek out an elusive sanctuary, a great equalizer where parents, toddlers, teenagers, seniors or even someone sleeping rough on city streets at night can spend the day.”

Aylmer’s Lucy Ferris Library has been this sort of institution and must remain so – please! It is not a monument to the City’s planners and politicians, not an advertisement for Gatineau, and not a magnet to draw shoppers to rue Principale. It is a service used daily by many families, and that has to be Number One!
