--- Suspect in string of break and enters, sexual assaults and indecent exposures in Aylmer turned himself in to police
Gatineau Police (SPVG) recently arrested a man suspected of sexually assaulting people in Aylmer on June 26. In a press release issued on July 8, The SPVG says the suspect could possibly be charged for sexual assault, breaking and entering, and indecent exposure. But it did not publish the identity of the suspect since the provincial Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) has not yet authorized charges laid against him. It added that it intends to publish an update on the situation, where the man’s identity will be publicized, at an appropriate time.
On June 29, police issued a warning to residents about a man sexually harassing people in three neighbourhoods of Aylmer. The warning came in response to reports of a man seen masturbating and flashing his privates while trespassing on private properties. The July 8 press release added that the SPVG was investigating another sexual assault incident that took place on June 26 following a break and enter in the same area – stating that the victim was able to escape the assailant.
The SPVG recently increased police presence in the area. Stating that the investigation had taken many steps and progressed positively at this point, the SPVG said that on the evening of June 30 – the day after it warned residents about the situation – the main suspect sought by the police turned himself in.
Warranted in another case, police took the suspect into custody on the spot, where he has remained since. The SPVG says that the investigation continued with police filing a dossier with the DPCP about the June 26 incident. The DPCP will evaluate the file and evidence against the suspect before determining what charges he will face. Police say they are continuing to investigate other possibly-related incidents in the same area, for which more charges may be added. It added that no sexual assault incidents have been reported in the area since June 30.
