The Outaouais SPCA and 3R Québec Join Forces Against Food Waste

A new collaboration between the Outaouais Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the environmental organization 3R Québec is giving food a second life while helping families with pets. Launched a few weeks ago as a pilot project, the partnership is based on a weekly exchange. Each week, 3R Québec delivers a basket of fresh vegetables for the SPCA's animals and, depending on availability, collects bags of dry pet food that cannot be used at the shelter.

The recovered food is then integrated into 3R Québec's distribution activities for vulnerable people, making better use of available resources while addressing a real need in the community.

By facilitating access to this food, the partnership helps some families keep their pets during difficult times. Beyond providing food assistance, the initiative also aims to reduce waste. Bags of food that are not needed for the SPCA's operations can be redistributed rather than remaining unused.

After a few weeks, the SPCA reported that the project is working well and meeting a real need. The pilot nature of the initiative also allows both organizations to assess the needs, logistics, and concrete results of this collaboration over time.
