----- The transition from fossil fuels ... or not
The transition from fossil fuels has already begun.
Over the last decade, at least 53,000 oil and gas workers in Canada have lost their jobs. And some estimates suggest that as many as 450,000 people in the sector could be displaced by 2050. Without a transition plan in place, Canada is hurtling towards disastrous consequences for workers and communities that currently rely on the oil and gas sector for jobs and livelihoods. We urgently need a just transition that leaves no one behind.
Sign our letter ( our website) and call on Justin Trudeau to introduce just transition legislation now! Demand that he lives up to the promise he made in 2019 to help people and communities transition from the fossil fuel industry.
Big Oil executives have for decades tried to get in the way of meaningful climate action. And right now, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), the country’s most powerful oil lobby, is at it again. In the aftermath of the federal election, and the final days of the federal consultation on a just transition, CAPP appealed to its supporters to help stall meaningful legislation.
Under the guise of Canada's Energy Citizens, a group created and run by CAPP itself, the oil lobby group asked its supporters to flood the just transition consultation committee with messages of support for maintaining the status quo. CAPP also made false claims about the long-term stability of the fossil fuel sector and misleadingly blamed domestic climate policies for the loss of jobs in the oil and gas sector.
